Every year, between January and March, the southern Serengeti transforms into a nursery for the Great Migration. This 4-day adventure takes you deep into the Ndutu area, where over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born within just a few weeks. It’s a rare and emotional moment in the wild full of new life, dramatic survival scenes, and unmatched photo opportunities.
Your journey begins at the iconic Ngorongoro Crater, followed by two unforgettable days across the short-grass plains of Ndutu. While occasional rains add a muddy twist to the adventure, the experience remains smooth and rewarding. Our team ensures you’re always at the right place at the right time, blending comfort with real-time exploration. From newborn wildebeest taking their first steps to watchful predators waiting in the shadows, every day brings something raw and real just as nature intended.
After you arrive in Tanzania, begin your journey toward the Ngorongoro Highlands. The drive offers stunning scenery along the Great Rift Valley, with stops for photos or local culture along the way. Arrive at your lodge in Karatu for a relaxed afternoon and overnight, preparing for tomorrow’s crater adventure.
Overnight: Omega View Hotel , Eileens Tree Inn
Start early and descend into the Ngorongoro Crater – a natural wildlife haven. Enjoy game drives in the crater floor, home to elephants, lions, buffalo, and the elusive black rhino. After lunch by the hippo pool, continue your journey south toward Ndutu in the Serengeti ecosystem. Arrive just in time for sunset over the plains, and settle in for the night.
Overnight: Heritage Camps
Explore the Ndutu plains at their liveliest. This is the heart of the calving season — thousands of newborn wildebeest are scattered across the landscape, drawing attention from predators like big cats and hyenas. Drive across the short grass plains, stop near waterholes, and enjoy lunch in the bush. The day is raw and beautiful, filled with new life and moments you won’t forget.
Overnight: Heritage Camps
After a relaxed breakfast, enjoy a final morning game drive in Ndutu. Watch the herds one last time as the sun rises over the Serengeti. Begin your drive back to Arusha with a lunch stop on the way. Arrive by late afternoon, marking the end of your unforgettable Calving Season Safari
